I want to describe all preparations (and some) for the colloquium, but I don’t want to include jargons. I’m not even sure if I can do it, but here are some stories I’d like to tell. I didn’t bother adhering all of them so I’d just enumerate. Haha.
- For some illustrations in my presentation, I’d use the Consumer Price Index (CPI) of a certain country. I used the CPI of the US because of its stable economic condition, and that the estimates from a previous illustration (in the same research) used US data. Getting results for one country is NOT an easy thing to do – I have to fit curves, integrate, etc. So I decided to stick with just one country. [Fast forward.] A week before the presentation day, I thought that it would be cool if at the end of my presentation, people would ask for more, i.e. “More! More!” So I decided to put additional illustrations after my ‘thank you’ slide. Two days before the actual presenation, I tried using the CPI of the Philippines. I planned to discuss it after people shouted “More! More!” My plan backfired. (Or did it?) The model I’m studying worked better in the Philippine scenario, and that I just have to include it in the actual slides. (To compare with the US, blah blah.) That ended it. No more “More! More!” from the Math Club people, even though I asked them to do that earlier. Haha. (But some of them still did.) (more…)
1. Our undergraduate colloquium is on Monday, and I’m opening the show. I’m not the most excited person. Although, it’s perfectly okay.
2. Finally had a little time to talk to Coco again. Missed our online ’til wee hours times. (She lost internet connection, having to transfer to another dormitory.)
3. Sir Joma treated us like crazy last night at the Chocolate Kiss. I have been trying the sommersizing diet for a week, but I had to give in. Haha. A little ‘funky food’ won’t hurt. Sir bribed us with food. We must perform well on Monday!
I wasn’t able to sleep until around 1AM that night, probably because of too much iced tea, and because me and my room mates were doing gags. Haha.
4. Watched Rubie practice her presentation with Ma’am Issa. Had lots of fun. In short, umepal.
5. It’s out! Womanizer is the first single off her sixth studio album, Circus. The song definitely grows on you. After 3-4 listens, I can’t stop myself repeating the song. Although, I’d still go for Gimme More. Wah! Congratulations, B! ;)

Happy birthday, good friends!

UPDATED! First was the UP Pep Squad, second was Britney Spears, and next our team: Kester and the Virgins! We just won first place at MMC’s Mix & Maths Trivia Quiz show. Haha! Special thanks to UP MMC for handing out Php1,500 as prize. Yay! We topped the other ~39 teams!
But before that, the probability of pushing through with joining the event was small. The original team was composed of myself, Beng, Raisa and Gabby. Gabby backed out last minute. Beng had class ’til 7PM, but he said he’s usually dismissed by 5PM. (Contest starts at 5:30PM.) Raisa was not replying to any of my text messages all day. By 5:25PM, I was still confined in our Math 197 class, not done with our report, and with my full attention on that report rather than that of Mix & Maths. It was a wake up call when I received a text message from Beng and Raisa, that he’s waiting in the CSSC office, and that she’s on her way. Voila! We’re joining. Upon arriving at the office, Kester was there, and we decided to tag him along replacing Gabby. (Kester didn’t want to join as Vicman advertised the contest as a jologs quiz bee, and with Kester’s belief that he’s not jologs and he won’t be of any help. Turned out, however, he was able to answer a question, asking the name of Cow’s bear in Cow and Chicken. Manure, the bear. And, only our group got points for that question.)
We had several stupid mistakes. Being the team with members from the council, we didn’t get the correct answer when asked which month was the Department of Mathematics upgraded to its present institute status. Grrr. I had the feeling that time that my team mates were a little annoyed because I insisted on July instead of August; I was from I-Math so they thought I knew better. August was right. TOO BAD. Then at the final round, when asked about the longest word without vowels, we should’ve earned six points had we spelled the word correctly: rhythms, instead of rythms. TSK.
Yay! After the event, Raisa and Kester had to leave immediately; Beng and I dined at Combi. (The first time tried their fried cookies!) That night, we weren’t able to contain our happiness still, and talked about it before parting off. Haha.

UPDATED! ONE: Even though I had no idea when or if the 2008 Video Music Awards will be airing at MTV Philippines (because they had no VMA commercials, their website has an outdated program grid and their information agent was not replying to my mails), I was able to watch it through video streaming. Sept 9, 9PM ET would be Sept 10, 9AM here. I woke up early for this, and I wasn’t disappointed. [MTV Philippines aired it Sunday night, the week after.] (more…)
